Put Sony Camcorder AVCHD video to Adobe Premiere Pro

"I recorded some video on a Sony camcorder, but the camcorder broke before I could use the tool that converts that video into avi files which are easier to import into Premiere Pro. I was able to get the video off of the disc but now it is in AVCHD format and i'm not sure how to go about importing this into Premiere Pro (can i?). If not I want to be able to convert this AVCHD file to an avi or mpg which PP2 works with. How do i do this?"
