Sony Cyber-shot MPEG output not reading in imovie

I have a sony cyber-shot that out puts the movie format in MPEG.There is no problem that the movie play on quicktime,but when I import them into imovie for editing,I have tried to convert it using quicktime pro into every other format possible and for some reason every conversion results in the loss of the audio. Is there any good idea for me to import my sony cyber-shot AVCHD to mac for editing on FCP(X) and iMovie?
