Convert canon vixia hf video to mac to edit video in iMovie

How to upload Canon VIXIA HF videos onto imovie?

I have a Canon VIXIA HF and want to upload videos onto a Macbook pro, and edit them on iMovie.
How do I upload them, if I try plugging it into the usb, with the camera on playback, and plugged in to the charger, it still doesn't work. It will upload the pictures I have taken but not the videos...
