Review of Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS18

On the lookout for a consistent performing pocket zoom offering point and shoot simplicity and decent results without the need to spend a king's ransom? Panasonic is normally a reliable first stop. The 16.1 effective megapixel, 4x optical zoom Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS18 is one of two new slim-line pocket shooters from the brand for 2011, the other being the 14.1 megapixel FS16 which naturally sits just below it in the 'FS' (fashionable and stylish) range.
Both cameras boast an optically image stabilised wide-angle 28mm equivalent Leica branded lens - here extending up to 112m at the telephoto end - shoehorned into their slender 18.8mm depth. We also get an f/3.1 maximum lens aperture and 1/2.33-inch CCD sensor. Overall dimensions are 94.3x53.5x18.8mm, and the FS18 weighs a very manageable 121g with battery and SD memory card (104g without), pulling off that trick of feeling portably lightweight held in the palm, yet reassuringly sturdy when grasped tighter. The slender portions ensure it meets the demands of current fashion - eye appeal being buy appeal - with the black finish accentuating its dinky-ness. Other than that it's the usual boxy Panasonic rectangle; in other words nothing we haven't seen before.
As well as stills, 1280x720 pixels High Def video clips are further offered, here at 24fps and recorded in Motion JPEG format. Both are composed and reviewed via the aid of adequately visible if nothing special 2.7-inch, 230k dot resolution LCD, here presented in 4:3 aspect ratio with a 100% field of view, images written to optional SD card or 70MB internal memory straight out of the box. The screen is also auto adjusting according to ambient brightness levels, with 11 incremental steps for it to choose from. If you want to opt for the extremities of digital zoom, or as Panasonic calls it the 'Extra Optical Zoom', then this can be boosted up to a 36x equivalent, with inevitable resolution drop. Conversely, macro focus is down to 5cm from your subject, which isn't bad at this end of the market whilst at the same time hardly class leading.
Panasonic LUMIX FH5 features include:
16.1-Megapixels
1280 x 720p HD video recording
2.7-inch Intelligent LCD (detects lightning conditions and adjusts its own brightness levels)
4x Leica DC Optical Zoom Lens (increased to 5x with Intelligent Zoom)
MEGA OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)
Intelligent ISO Control
Intelligent Auto
Intelligent Resolution
Intelligent ISO Control Motion Detection
Intelligent Scene Selection
Face Detection AF/AE
Intelligent Scene Selector (Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset)
LUMIX Image Uploader (photo and video sharing directly from the camera when connected to a PC)
Scene Modes (28 variations to choose from)
70MB built-in memory

Easy to use camcorder:Canon PowerShot A3300 IS

The Canon Powershot A3300 IS is a small, easy to use digital compact camera with a high resolution 16 megapixel sensor, modest 5x optical zoom with a wide-angle 28mm focal length, 3 inch LCD screen and optical image stabiliser. Priced at around £150, the camera appears ideal for the point and shooter who needs a palm sized camera for nights and days out as well as holidays.
Looking at the front of the Canon Powershot A3300 IS, the 5x optical zoom proudly juts out of the body with the slim flash sat just above, which could cause trouble with red eye due to its alignment. The focal range is 5x optical which covers 28-140mm in 35mm terms.
There are three cameras in the range, the A3100, A3200 and the A3300 which sits at the top of the pile in terms of features. Build quality appears the same as the lower models and there are the same features on the camera. On top of the A3300 IS, it bears the same best shot dial which allows speedy access to certain functions such as video, scene modes, landscape and easy mode as well as standard auto and a program mode which still does everything for you, but it opens up more options in the menu system.
Review Summary:
The PowerShot A3300 covers basic picture-taking needs and then some with a good 4x zoom and decent 720p HD video.
Pros
Easy to use
Very good image quality
720p HD video
Cons
Tendency to overexpose
Flat contrast typical to class
Trouble viewing LCD outside

What do you think about Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Digital Camera

The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features.
The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn’t emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilised thanks to the built-in – and improved – Super SteadyShot.
What's in the Box?
The A700 is available in three kits: one with just the camera body ($1400), another with a 18 - 70 mm lens ($1500), and a third with a 16 - 105 mm lens ($1900). Here's what you'll find in the box for all three of these kits:
The 12.2 effective Megapixel DSLR-A700 camera body
F3.5 - 5.6, 18 - 70 mm Sony DT lens [DSLR-A700K kit only]
F3.5 - 5.6, 16 - 105 mm Sony DT lens [DSLR-A700P kit only]
NP-FM500H lithium-ion rechargeable battery
Battery charger
Wireless remote control
Body cap
Shoulder strap
USB cable
Video cable
CD-ROM featuring Picture Motion Browser, Image Data Converter, Image Data Lightbox, and Remote Camera Control software

Have a check on Canon EOS 550D

The Canon EOS 550D is a difficult product to categorize. Ostensibly designed to appeal to first-time DSLR buyers and enthusiasts, it offers a lot more technology, and at a higher price, than we might expect for a camera aimed squarely at this sector. Although it might seem logical for the 550D to replace the EOS 500D, the older camera is set to continue in Canon's lineup, which leaves the 550D pinched between its entry-level (represented by the still-current EOS 1000D and the 500D) and nominally enthusiast (the EOS 50D) peers. Confusingly however, apart from build quality (which is all but identical to the EOS 500D), the 550D has more in common with the prosumer EOS 7D, and - perhaps even more confusingly - it out-specifies the EOS 50D in many areas.

Central to the impressive specification of the EOS 550D is a high-spec movie mode which offers full HD capture at up to 30 fps, manual control over exposure, and the option to use an external stereo microphone. The new camera also inherits the EOS 7D's sophisticated metering system (which brings it a lot closer to similarly positioned Nikon SLRs).

Movie Resolution:1920x1080, 1280x720, 640x480

Keep eyes on Toshiba Camileo S30

Toshiba's Camileo S30 has the same svelte proportions and stylish design as last year's S20, but with a higher-resolution sensor, a larger digital zoom, and image stabilisation you can use in Full HD mode. Most significantly of all, it has a touchscreen for controlling the settings. It doesn't perform quite so well as some pocket Internet models in low light, but with a comparable price and more features it's worth considering.

Toshiba made the Camileo S30 pretty portable: it's super light at only 4 oz. and measures just a little thicker than the smallest Flip Cam.

The 3" touch screen is pretty easy to use, though you have to give it a poke or two to make it work properly; for the most part, it's just fine.

Sometimes it's hard to know which icon means what, so you'll have to dive down into the menus to see what each of them does.

The Camileo S30 comes with more features than the Flip Cam, like slow motion video, macro lens and an LED light, which are cool to have.

You can switch the mode from portrait to landscape so you won't lose focus as you move closer to your subject.

The slow motion feature is fun to fool around with, but it zooms you all the way in and lowers the quality, and we're not exactly sure why.

There's also a really bright LED light, which might be too much for the people you're shooting.

The Camileo's video quality is pretty good.

Normal light footage looks great. Colors are bright and accurate, and overexposure doesn't seem to be too much of a problem.

You might see some trailing when you move around.

Low light footage also looks good.

You'll randomly get weird dead pixels and grain but only when you're shooting in very low light and this doesn't always happen.

Sony releases rugged Sport HD version of its Bloggie camcorder

Mountain bikers, hikers and other adventurers wishing to record their outings on video now have another camcorder at their disposal – Sony's Bloggie Sport HD. It's a ruggedized (yes, that's a word) version of the company's existing Bloggie camera, and continues with the line's smartphone-like form, which includes a 2.7-inch touchscreen display.

The Sport model records 1080p video, and can also capture 5.1-megapixel stills – even while shooting video. It has a dust-proof casing, is waterproof to 16 feet (4.9 meters), and is sufficiently shock-proof to survive drops from heights of up to five feet (1.5 m). It has 4GB of built-in memory, which allows for the storage of up to two hours of full HD footage.

One of the camera's more interesting features is its Underwater Mode. This automatically adjusts the white balance when shooting underwater, to compensate for the manner in which the red and green spectra of the sunlight are absorbed by the water. This filtering of the sunlight is what causes underwater footage to have a bluish tinge (if artificial lights aren't used), and is traditionally addressed by attaching an amber filter to the lens.

Other features include SteadyShot image stabilization, a flip-out USB connector, a built-in LED light for shooting in dark environments, and Face Detection technology.

The Bloggie Sport HD camera is available now, for US$179.99.

A method to import Sony Cyber-Shot Video to iPhoto smoothly

iPhoto is designed to allow importing from digital cameras, scanners, picture CDs and the Internet. Almost all digital cameras are recognized without additional software, as are many scanners. iPhoto supports most common image file formats.
Movie'11 works with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 2, iPod nano (5th generation), and iPod touch (4th generation).
iMovie'11 works with most Mini DV tape-based camcorders using DV and HDV formats, which use a FireWire cable (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) to transfer video.
Digital still cameras and other types of tapeless video devices—including some video phones and other hybrid devices—often import their video clips into iPhoto. Some compatible video clips stored in the iPhoto library can be accessed directly from the iMovie Event Library.
