How to enjoy your JVC GZ-HD40?

The JVC GZ-HD40 is a more than a simple update in the Everio line of hard disk drive (HDD) camcorders. You wouldn't know it from a casual glance, but a lot of changes have occurred under the hood. For the first time, JVC has switched from CCD chips to a single CMOS. Let us assure, this is huge and beneficial change for performance, and low light performance in particular. That's not the only first. The GZ-HD40, along with the near identical GZ-HD30 ($999 MSRP with a smaller hard drive), record in both MPEG-2 TS and AVCHD compressions. While it certainly doesn't simplify operation for the average consumer, it opens up a whole new world of compatibility with editing systems. It also assures the widely-recognized assumption that AVCHD is the new standard for consumer formats, with JVC joining Sony, Panasonic, and Canon.
Is the Everio GZ-HD40 worth the money?
The menu design is not really in order, which doesn’t make it easy for beginners. Some of the controls are pretty small. Some people have commented on the hand strap, saying it isn’t comfortable. But, the camcorder is small enough to just carry around easily.
It does have the awesome 120GB hard drive. It has great color in good light.
The camera isn't bad overall but you might be able to find a cheaper camcorder that is just as good if not better.
The JVC GZ-HD30 and GZ-HD40 record in both the AVCHD and MPEG-2 TS compressions.

Review of Panasonic AG-HPX250 HD Handheld Camcorder

There's no other camera on the market like the new Panasonic AG-HPX250 — a rugged 4:2:2 camcorder recording 10-bits to P2 AVC-Intra for under $6,000. The critical importance of capturing at 10-bits cannot be overstated. Compared to the vast crop of anemic 8-bit recording formats like AVCHD, XDCAM, and HDV, 10-bit capture (à la HDCAM SR) enables four times more precise color sampling, while also eliminating the dreaded contour artifacts often seen in 8-bit systems.
The HPX250 has great features, for multiple shooting scenarios, including reality TV production, documentaries, news-gathering and more. For example, Flash Band Compensation (FBC) helps to eliminate color tears in the video (often seen with other MOS based cameras) when shooting in areas where external flashes are used. Its Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS) feature varies the gamma within the image to help in scooting situations that quickly vary from bright to dark. In addition, with the 2X Focus Assist function, you can zoom the center section of the screen to determine if the focus is correct.
The HPX250 offers international HD/SD formats and frame rates. In addition to AVC-Intra 100 recording, the HPX250 also records in AVC-Intra 50, industry-standard DVCPRO HD, as well as standard definition in DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV. The camera can record for over 5 hours in AVC-Intra 100 at 720/24pN, almost 3 hours in AVC-Intra 100 1080/24pN and 2 hours in other AVC-Intra 100 or DVCPRO HD formats on two 64GB cards. In addition the HPX250 offers variable frame rate capability in 1080p up to 30fps (17 steps) as well as 720p up to 60fps (25 steps) for undercranking/overcranking to create fast or slow-motion effects.

Import Panasonic HDC, Panasonic AVCHD to FCPX, FCP for editing

"Has anyone tried the new AVCCAM Importer from Panasonic with Final Cut Pro X and a Panasonic HDC-TM900 with 1080p video? I have just started reading all of the posts on issues with TM900 and Final Cut Pro X with 1080p video and was hoping the new plugin from Panasonic may have helped! My concern is the download only references Final Cut Pro and QuickTime 7.I have a 2011 MacBook Pro which has QuickTime 10 and was hoping to buy FCPX but won't if I can't import my video properly. I was even willing to go through a conversion process but in looking at all of the board posts, it seems that for the Panasonic TM900 with 1080p video, there are not any programs that will convert properly, i.e. one puts a green screen every second or there is video artifacts.
If the new plug-in-in "AVCCAM Importer" does not help with the TM900 / 1080p video in FCPX, what alternatives do I have to edit HD 1080p video on my Mac?" from discussions apple

They can't be smoothly imported to FCP(X) for "FCPX does not support footage recorded in 1080-60p from this Camcorder; FCPX does not support footage recorded in 1080-50p from this Camcorder", here we understand that a converter is necessary to bring the AVCHD files to FCP, FCPX for fluent editing, then Panasonic AVCHD Converter for Mac is the best choice for you, it is the professional Panasonic AVCHD, iFrame H.264 to FCPX Converter for Mac 10.5, Mac Snow Leopard and Mac Lion. Give a look at BlackBerry Storm 9530

The BlackBerry Storm, the first BlackBerry with a touchscreen, is now available exclusively in the U.S. from Verizon Wireless.
The Storm outperforms most BlackBerrys with its crisp, innovative touch-button screen. Boasting a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus still and video camera, the Storm impresses by packing numerous features into its sleek and sturdy form-factor.
There is a lot to like about this device, including its sharp display, a camera, and applications like Visual Voicemail, but there are still some glaring problems. Even after updating its operating system with Verizon's new patch, there is still lag present in a lot of applications which hinders the phone's functionality in many areas. And the lack of Wi-Fi and QWERTY keyboard, and unrelenting fingerprints detract from the innovative hardware.
Features
While the RIM BlackBerry Storm might be the first touch screen for Research in Motion, the company wanted to make sure the smartphone offered the same feel and functionality of previous and current BlackBerrys. The Storm runs the latest BlackBerry OS 4.7, bringing an updated user interface much like the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Pearl Flip. You now get DataViz Documents To Go Standard Edition, so you can now edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files as well. If you want the capability to create new documents, you will have to upgrade to the Premium Edition. We had no problems opening and working on Word and Excel documents, but we can't imagine doing more than minor edits on the Bold or any other smartphone for that matter. Other PIM applications include a Calendar, a task list, a memo pad, a voice recorder, a calculator, a password keeper, and more.
The Storm has some unique features that unmistakably mark RIM's attempt to capture some of the strong consumer smartphone market that the iPhone currently dominates. RIM is relying on its name to be able to build buzz around the device, but unfortunately it largely fails to deliver an infallible device that would live up to BlackBerry users' high expectations.
The touch screen is cool, but I'm not sure it's a better solution than alternative navigation methods. However, the large, crisp screen is nonetheless phenomenal and is easily the best feature of the Storm.
The sharp screen with its button-like functionality is a major selling point; the abundance and usefulness of the preloaded applications give users plenty to play with out of the box, and the camera is exceptional. All of these bode very well for the Storm but it is not without its shortcomings. The lack of Wi-Fi, the upper limit on how fast and accurately you can type on the touchscreen, and the current lag are all major downgrades in my book. Although the latter can hopefully be rectified with an update, users should be able to buy a reliable device that performs as promised out of the box with no updating necessary.
Pros
1) Blackberry Product Quality
2) Tremendous battery life
3) Strong network support with Verizon (unlike someone else we know)
Cons
1) The App Store is truly the make or break here (sorry, not Wi-Fi) and it's success will be critical!!
2) Speaking of Apple, I love my iTunes. Can the Storm manage my library?? Hmmm
3) FINE!!!! No Wi-Fi. But I put it third so take that!!

Review of BlackBerry Bold 9700

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is available from both T-Mobile and AT&T. Both carriers are charging $199.99 for the phone when you sign a new two-year service contract. That's less than the $300 the original Bold cost at launch.
The Bold2 may be the best looking BlackBerry yet. The most notable contrast with the first-generation Bold is its overall size. It's thinner, shorter, and less wide than the Bold. It's also less wide than the BlackBerry Tour, though not by much.
Its distinguishing features include subdued chrome accents around the bezel, a faux-leather backed battery compartment, black matte convenience keys on the sides, and of course, a track pad where users have become accustomed to seeing the iconic but sometimes finicky BlackBerry Ball.
Also changed in this version is the layout of the camera and flash on the back of the device -- they're now side by side rather than above one another. The Bold2 also has charging contacts on the side of the device that are discussed more below. The most practical change in styling is a redesign of the battery compartment which now feels more secure and in solid.
The good: The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 boasts a sleeker design that includes an optical trackpad, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a brilliant display. The smartphone is 3G capable and offers Wi-Fi with UMA support, Bluetooth, and GPS. It also gets a faster processor and updates to BlackBerry OS 5.0.
The bad: The BlackBerry browser doesn't compare to the competition. The handset's compact size results in a smaller display and keyboard, but they aren't deal-breakers.
The bottom line: The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 brings T-Mobile its first 3G BlackBerry and improves on its predecessor with a sleeker design and more power. We only wish it had a better browser to complete the package.

Tips for shooting video with Waterproof Camcorder

Shooting videos under water is a challenge. There's the whole "lack of oxygen" thing of course, but more importantly, the lighting is crazy, it's dark, you're moving around.

You can leave your camcorder on "auto" and hope for the best. This lets the camcorder make up its own mind about what settings will work best to achieve the best looking video. But often, auto isn't enough. If you own an underwater camcorder, or have a housing for your traditional camcorder, here are some tips to get the most of your underwater experience:

Tip #1 - Boost the Exposure: Exposure control is one of the most common features on a camcorder: it regulates how bright or dark your video appears. When you're filming underwater, it's inevitably going to be darker, so increasing the brightness through exposure control can compensate.

Tip #2 - Use an Underwater Mode: If you're filming with an underwater camcorder, chances are it has an underwater mode. This mode will optimize the camcorder's settings for underwater shooting. Before you start using it though, you should try to take some sample footage first. Sometimes the results are not as good as what you'd find in "auto" mode.

Tip #3 - Boost the Display Brightness: If you're scuba diving, or just swimming around the pool with your goggles on, it's going to be difficult to see what you're doing. Adjusting the brightness of the camcorder's LCD display will help you properly frame your video. Many, though not all, camcorders allow you to bump up the display brightness in the menu settings.

Tip #4 - White Balance: Some camcorders will let you manually set white balance to adjust the camcorder to a new lighting environment (check your owner's manual to see if your particular model supports manual white balance adjustment). If have this option, you can typically aim the camcorder at a subject while it analyzes the new lighting conditions and adjusts accordingly. If you're using an underwater housing and not a waterproof camcorder, you likely won't be able to access the menu to perform a manual white balance.

Tip #5 - Easy on the Zoom: With waves rolling overhead, the light beneath the water is going to be constantly changing. That's going to make it challenging for your camcorder to focus quickly. If you're constantly zooming, you may experience some focusing delay, so it's best to use the zoom sparingly. If you need a close up, move yourself, not the lens. [Note: this does not apply when filming underwater animals with sharp teeth.

Tip #6 - Keep Image Stabilization On: Image stabilization keeps camcorder footage steady, if you're not. Many optical and digital image stabilization systems in a camcorder can be turned on or off. If you're heading underwater, be sure to turn on your camcorder's image stabilization (usually done through the menu). You're going to be moving a lot underwater, and it will help steady your footage.

Tip #7 - Experiment: There's no "golden rule" when it comes to underwater filming. You'll have to play around with your camcorder's features to get the best settings possible. That being the case, it pays to familiarize yourself with your camcorder's features before you dive in. The best way to do that is by reading the manual. Yes, I know this is like being told to eat your spinach. But sometimes with camcorders, as with life, there are no shortcuts.

The Good: The Sony Handycam HDR-PJ10's built-in projector and stereo speakers are very convenient for sharing home movies. Plus, the HD camcorder has the same wide-angle lens, built-in USB cable, and good automated performance as its projector-free siblings.

The Bad: If you don't plan to use the projector, the rest of the camcorder's performance and feature set are a bit underpowered for the money.

The Bottom Line: You're paying a couple hundred extra for the projector in the otherwise frills-free Sony Handycam HDR-PJ10 over its identical twin, the CX160. But if you regularly show off your vacation videos in the homes of friends and family then it's worth it.
